Rajasthan High Court Reinforces Protection of Udaipur’s Water Heritage…
The lakes of Udaipur have long been celebrated as the city’s lifeline, shaping its identity, ecology, and economy. Recognizing their immense environmental significance, the Rajasthan High Court recently underscored the urgent need to safeguard these water bodies from growing threats such as pollution, encroachment, and unregulated development.

During its consideration of issues concerning the preservation of Udaipur’s lakes, the Court emphasized that natural water resources are public assets that must be protected for present and future generations. It observed that lakes serve not only as sources of water but also as crucial ecological systems that support biodiversity, regulate local climate conditions, and contribute to the region’s cultural heritage.
The Court expressed concern over the gradual degradation of lake ecosystems caused by human activities. Encroachments around lake catchment areas, disposal of waste, and increasing urban pressure have adversely affected the health of these water bodies. To address these challenges, authorities were directed to take effective and coordinated measures aimed at conservation and restoration.

Environmental experts have consistently warned that the deterioration of Udaipur’s interconnected lake network could have serious consequences for groundwater recharge, water availability, and tourism. The High Court’s intervention therefore reflects a broader commitment to sustainable urban development and environmental governance.
The Court noted that Article 21 of the Constitution, as interpreted by the Supreme Court, encompasses the right to a clean and healthy environment. It further observed that Article 48A casts a duty on the State to protect and improve the environment and safeguard forests, lakes, rivers and wildlife, while Article 51A(g) recognises the duty of every citizen to protect and improve the natural environment

The decision serves as a reminder that conservation cannot be achieved through government action alone. Active participation by local communities, civic organizations, and citizens is equally important. Public awareness, responsible waste management, and strict adherence to environmental regulations are essential for ensuring the long-term survival of these invaluable resources.
As Udaipur continues to grow, balancing development with ecological preservation remains a critical challenge. The High Court’s observations reaffirm the principle that environmental protection is not merely a legal obligation but a collective responsibility. The future of Udaipur’s lakes depends on timely action, effective policy implementation, and a shared commitment to preserving the city’s unique water heritage.
