The Gupteshwar Ji Temple is a very old and significant temple of the Lord Shiva sect situated comfortably close to Udaipur. It is thought that its
inception dates back to the early medieval times (approximately the 8th–10th century). The local people believed the temple to be the creation
of Shaivite saints and ascetics, who, after great effort, revealed the naturally formed (swayambhu) Shiva lingam that was inside a cave-like structure
and in the Aravalli hills, was hidden. Because such a pious and sacred thing was found in such a concealed place, the deity became known as
Gupteshwar Mahadev (which means “the hidden Lord Shiva”). There is also a cave in the temple.
In fact, in the course of history, the temple was not created by any certain Maharana but rather it evolved through people’s worship as a spiritual
center. The saints occupied the place for meditation and the villagers who lived in proximity offered their prayers for protection, rainfall, and general
well-being. No doubt, the site was growing and so a lot of small structures were added and maintained by the followers over the years. Gupteshwar
Ji Temple is now considered as a place of worship that has been already established thousands of years ago, located in the midst of nature, and
possessing strong spiritual power attracting not only devotees but also tourists who seek a quiet and authentic religious experience during their
visit to Udaipur.
